Ayushmann Khurrana, the Actor with a Difference
Ayushmann Khurana was born on 14 September 1984 to Poonam and P. Khurrana. He was named Nishant Khurrana but his father who is an astrologer changed his name when Ayushmann was three years old to Ayushmann as he believed it will benefit his son. His brother Aparshakti Khurrana is also an actor who mostly does secondary roles. Ayushmann is married to Tahira Kashyap who is an author. While his father is an astrologer, his mother Poonam is a housewife He did his schooling at St. John’s High School, Chandigarh and later he graduated from DAV College, Chandigarh. After that, he got admission to the School of Communication Studies, Punjab University where he majored in English literature and got a master’s degree in Mass Communication from the School of Communication Studies, Punjab University.

He was always interested in acting and for five years he did serious theatre. He acted in many plays in Gaiety Theatre, Shimla. Ayushamann was a founding member of DAV College’s “Aaghaaz” and “Manchtantra”, active theatre groups in Chandigarh. He also did street plays and won prizes in national college festivals like Mood Indigo (IIT Bombay), OASIS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani), and St. Bedes Shimla. He received the Best Actor award for playing Ashwatthama in Dharamvir Bharati’s Andha Yug.
Ayushmann was always interested in acting and shifted to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood. He has been part of many MTV shows like MTV Fully Faltoo Movies, Cheque De India, and Jaadoo Ek Baar. He was the winner of the second season of the famous MTV show Roadies which made him famous to a little extent. After that, he turned into host and hosted India’s Got Talent with co-host Nikhil Chinappa. He also hosted the second season of MTV Rock On and India’s Got Talent on Colors, and was a part of the anchoring team of Extra Innings T20 for Indian Premier League Season 3 on SET Max with Gaurav Kapur, Samir Kochhar, and Angad Bedi. He also anchored the dance-based reality show Just Dance on STAR Plus. In between, he was trying to get entry into Bollywood and he got his first break with the movie ‘Vicky Donor’ directed by Shoojit Sircar. It also was the debut movie of Yami Gautam and the movie was a sleeper hit that year and Ayushmann received the Filmfare Award for Best Debut (Male). Along with being an actor, he is a good singer also and sang the famous song ‘Paani Da Rang,’’ for which he got the best singer award also.
After the success of Vicky Donor, his career went through a slump when his movies like Nuatnaki Sala and Hawaizada did not do well at the box office but he made a comeback with Sharat Katariya’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha where Bhoomi Pedenekar was the female lead. It tells the story of an underperforming man who is married against his will to an overweight woman. The movie tackled the issue of fat shaming and was a success at the box office and the performances of all the actors were appreciated.
After the success of Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Ayushmann created a niche for himself by acting in movies considered taboo in India such as sperm donation, erectile dysfunction, Homosexuality, etc. He acted in movies like Badhai Ho, Subh Mangal Savdhaan, Bala, Article 15, Subh Mangal Phir Savdhaan, etc. He also acted in romantic movies like Meri Pyaari Bindu and Bareily ki Barfi which was big hit. His movie Andhadhun directed by Sriram Raghavan is a milestone in Ayushmann’s career. Andhadhun was a neo-noir thriller movie where Khurana plays a piano player who fakes his blindness to become famous. The movie received love from the audience and critics alike. Ayushmaan Khurrana won National Award for his performance in the movie. His post-pandemic releases Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui and Anek tanked at the box office but he has got an interesting lineup of movies including Doctor G, An Action Hero, and Dream Girl 2.
