Radha Ashtami is dedicated to the Radha Rani, the consort of Shri Krishna. This year the auspicious day is today, September 4. This day marks the birth anniversary of Radha Rani. She was born on the eighth day (Ashtami tithi) of Shukla Paksha (bright phase of the lunar cycle) in the Bhadrapada month.
According to sacred scriptures, Radha is one of the manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that she represents Lord Krishna’s consciousness and if one were to have a higher level of understanding, Radha represents the finite who blends into the infinite (God, Krishna). It is also believed that Radha is inseparable from Krishna. Even today, in the Braj Bhoomi (Lord Krishna’s birthplace), people greet each other by chanting “Radhey Radhey”.
On this day, devotees observe fast for the first half of the day and break it only after offering their prayers to Radha during Madhyana (afternoon). Temples dedicated to Radha Krishna are decorated and Radha’s feet that are otherwise covered for the rest of the year are unveiled in some shrines. Devotees also sing songs that glorify Radha’s love for Krishna.
